Set the return time first
Identify when you must be home and when you can actually leave. The window includes travelling, breaks and the visit. Straight-line distances on city pages do not calculate driving time.
Choose a main stop
Start with the place that makes the outing worthwhile. Prepare directions and assess the remaining time. A second stop can be optional rather than an obligation that shortens the main visit.
Keep a closer alternative
Choose an option for a late departure or inaccessible destination. It should offer the same kind of experience: a break, meeting or view. This avoids rebuilding the whole plan at the last moment.
Review what to repeat
Afterwards, consider whether the format worked: enough time at the stop, an easy return and a worthwhile place. That is more useful for the next plan than distance alone. Give the journal entry a recognisable title.
